     harewood 2005

This is the car Brodie has taken to Overall champion wins in 2004 & 2006 of the lotus 7 club sprint and hillclimb championship, as well as 4 consecutive class 6 class championships.

Hopefully we will see Brodie at some club events, and hope he has a good time in his single seater.

If I had the money and garage space I could be tempted but would be embarrassed about my inability to get the most out of it and get no where near brodies times, also if it was road legal it would be more appealing to me :)

    I've been busy

Ok- so no blog post for nearly a month, I got lots of excuses.  But mainly i have been in the garage trying to get everythign back together with the help of a few friends...

Everything is back in and last Tuesday we fired the engine up (just for 30s) to make sure it would, and it ticked over nicely with a somewhat meaty/roaty exhaust note than before

It is still a little way off being ready to run in, but mostly it is the last bits and bobs to do

    • Route loom for new SPA gauges (more on those later....)
    • Gearbox mount bolt
    • Centre arm rest
    • Driver seat
    • Refit catch tank and centre blanking plate

there are a bunch of other smaller jobs, but besides that we should be ready to get it run in

    Why Hillclimbing & Sprinting?

OK - so why have I ended up participating inthe sport of speed events either up a hill or over a sprint/circuit course....I have to go back to the start and a bit of history about the cars I have owned...

My first sportscar was a rather pretty Sylva Striker (the yellow one in this picture http://www.se7ens.net/meets/images/PIC00004.jpg)  I owned this for a number of years, crashed it once had it rebuilt and took my first tentative steps into trackdays...

After a few years I 'upgraded', am sure the Sylva boys may disagree on that point... to a caterham, which is what i really wanted but couldn't afford when I bought the sylva, in fact it was this exact car http://www.se7ens.net/meets/images/PIC00012.jpg  this was very much a road going car, with comfy seats, carpets, heater and road biased tyres...but it did have a straight cut box.  I then started to get into trackdays in a bigger way and drove to various circuits across the UK and even Circuit de Catalunya in it.

However at one of those events at Anglessey i drive a friends 1800 aeroscreened superlight, and I was hooked...

So after a bit of negotiation i sold the first caterham and got a superlight kit to build from caterham.

After building this I started to do more and more trackdays as the car was more suited for this type of use...but after a a couple of things happenned

    1. I started to get a competitie urge
    2. The Lotus 7 Club of GB started up a speed series, and my cars spec suited the class structure...

as I had all the kit neccersary (helmet, race suit etc) it wasn't much of an effort to get an MSA license and attend some events, and after the first taste of proper motorspoprt I was totally hooked...

Now of course there are good and bad parts to Hillclimbing & sprinting versus other types of motorsport, and I have often been asked if I have ever considered racing properly, and I have been tempted but I usually bring out my usual quote on the subject

"In racing I could be happily going about my business and for no fault of my own I can be cuaght up in an incident that wasn't my fault, and either have a serious injury or serious hit to my wallet.  But with speed events if I have an accident it is no ones fault but my own"

I have been to enough caterham race meets to feel justified with this approach, well at least that is how I justify it to myself...

Anyway below is a little for and against list for why Hillclimbing Vs Racing

    For
    1. It is relatively cheap to get into the sport, there isn't much you need beyond a license, overalls and a helmet to get going.  Any car will fit into a class at most club events.
    2. It is all down to you, you make one tiny mistake and your run is ruined.  I like this aspect of the sport the fact that you have to get everything right over in some case 1 run.  It really focuses the mind on what needs to happen.
    3. The level and club i compete in is extremely friendly and good natured.  Not sure if that is the case everwhere.
    4. Entry fees are usually cheap (but see #1 in the against file)
    5. Some of the venues are extremely challenging and in some places frigtning, this gets the adreline pumping.  I am sure the adrenlaine pumps in other forms of motorsporttoo.  Butyou are never doing 80 mph plus with stone walls 2 foot either side, or up a hill such as wiscombe where the trees are protected by railway sleepers...although I guess rallying has similar 'expereinces'

    Against

    1. All though entry fees are cheap, you don't get that much 'track time' for your money, usually you will get 2 practice and 2 timed runs, whihc may not add up to much more than 4 minutes.
    2. There can be a lot of hanging around inbetween runs. Usually good to either get some kip from an early start or fiddle with somethign on the car...
    3. Some of the venues are not that salubrious and facilities can be minimal.

I am sure there are more and will update if I think of anything
